This year Yamaha Motor Europe is celebrating its
65thanniversary. This is
being honoured on their website with a series of articles documenting iconic
moments and products in the brand’s history including the development of their
first outboard engine the P-7.
The development project for Yamaha’s first
outboard motor began in 1958 culminating in the launch of the P-7 engine in
1960. The development team for this engine consisted of just two engineers and
was conducted entirely by trial and error. This engine was based on small
engines originally developed for motorcycles and shared many of the same parts,
this made it suitable for both pleasure boating and commercial use.
It was not until a year later in 1961 that Yamaha
outboards became accepted in the market and this came with the launch of the
P-3 engine. This engine became known as
“Yamaha’s yellow tin hat” due to its distinctive yellow fuel tank.
Marine Power and Servicing is a Yamaha service centre
and main dealer and we can supply outboards from 2.5hp all the way up to 300hp as
well as supplying spares and service parts for all engines. A range of Yamaha outboard engines can be
seen on display at our showroom at Deacons marina.
